Our Top 5 Family Engagement Stategies

Family engagement strategies are thoughtful and practical! Here’s top 5 strategies, with a bit of additional detail and clarity to make them even more impactful:

Create a welcoming environment by having faculty and staff greet families as they enter and leave the school. A simple “Good morning” or “Have a nice day!” can make a significant difference in how families feel about the school. To enhance this approach, consider professional development on customer service, like the one provided by Nordstrom. This can help staff learn effective ways to make families feel valued and respected from the moment they step into the school.

Help parents support their children by providing workshops that address real-time learning experiences. Examples include:

  • Demonstrations on how to navigate the school’s website and access important resources.
  • Workshops on logging into and using student portals for monitoring progress.

Sessions on conducting effective internet searches and understanding different search engines. By equipping families with these practical skills, you enhance their ability to engage with their child’s education and foster a stronger connection to the school

Ensure families are informed about school activities and district news through a variety of communication methods. Use email, phone calls, robo-calls, text messages, and mailed flyers to reach different families effectively. Since access to and preferences for communication methods can vary, employing a multi-channel approach helps ensure that everyone stays informed and connected.

Celebrate academic and extracurricular successes by providing opportunities for students to display their achievements. This can include events, exhibitions, or showcases where students can present their work to families. Highlighting academic accomplishments with the same enthusiasm as sports or arts fosters pride in students and encourages family involvement.

Actively seek and value feedback from families through surveys and other feedback mechanisms. Families are deeply invested in their children’s success and their insights can be invaluable for school improvement. By listening to and incorporating their suggestions, you demonstrate respect for their perspectives and strengthen the partnership between home and school.
